Indian telcos earn Rs 46,891 cr in Q1, Airtel leads pack

Bharti Airtel has cornered around 22 per cent of the total revenue of Rs 46,891.61 crore earned by telecom service providers during the first quarter of 2011-12, regulator Trai said. Airtel’s gross revenue was the highest at Rs 10,212.96 crore, followed by Vodafone at Rs 6,893.91 crore, Idea Cellular at Rs 4,600.77 crore and state-run BSNL at Rs 4427.80 crore, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) said in its India Telecom Services Performance Indicator Report. India’s netizens: Now 100-mn strong

After mobile phones, India is set to see another revolution in the technology space. According to the latest report of the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), the number of internet users in India crossed the 100-million mark in September. This is a 13 per cent increase over last year, when the number of internet users stood at 87 million. The total number of ‘claimed’ internet users now stands at 112 million. Number portability requests just 2% of India’s wireless base

The number of requests received for MNP since it was launched in November 2010 reached only 18.1 million till August 2011 – 9 months after it was launched in November 2010 – a mere 2% of India’s wireless base of 865.71 million. India’s annual mobile handsets demand to reach 350mn by 2020

Demand of mobile handsets in the country is expected to reach 350 million units per annum by 2020, says a study by industry body FICCI with market analyst firm Ernst and Young (E&Y). “India is the world’s second-largest telecom market after China, with the total wireless subscriber base crossing 850 million at the end of June, 2011. By 2020, the handset demand is projected to reach 350 million a year,” the study said. Source

Handset sale in India expected to reach 35 crore by 2020

Sale of mobile handsets in India is expected to reach 35 crore units per annum by 2020 and the average selling price (ASP) of handsets in the country is estimated to rise to Rs. 2,950 by that year from Rs. 2,300 in 2010, according to a joint study by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce of Industry (Ficci) and global consulting firm Ernst and Young (E&Y). Tata Teleservices May Take Part in India Mobile Consolidation, DoCoMo Says

NTT DoCoMo Inc., Japan’s biggest mobile-phone operator, said its partner Tata Teleservices Ltd. in India may take part in consolidation in the world’s second- largest wireless market. “If you look at the positioning of Tata Teleservices, it is possible that they can be part of this consolidation,” Masatoshi Suzuki, a DoCoMo senior executive vice president in charge of overseas strategy, said in an interview in Geneva yesterday. “We need to look at the possibility of growth as well as at the regulatory environment.” Source

India on Monday unveiled a set of proposals to streamline its regulations for the telecommunications sector, which has been struggling amid price wars and allegations of corruption stemming from the government’s sale of radio spectrum in 2008.
