July 4th TRAI’s directive for providing Value Added Services (VAS) to the end users, dissapointing

by Paul Joseph July 15, 2011 Featured

Considering the interest of mobile phone consumers of country, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on July 4th issued some strong directives to the telecom operators on the procedure of providing Value Added Services (VAS) to the end users. However, these directives would affect revenues of Telcos who are already battling falling ARPUs and are eying improved incomes after the launch of 3G services, the major attraction of which are the lucrative VAS services. TRAI has rolled out the directives under 9 clauses in its statement. In its clause it says, All Cellular Mobile Service Providers and Unified Access Service Providers are directed that no chargeable value added service shall be provided to a customer without his explicit consent and that any value added service, which was earlier being provided free of charge, shall not be made chargeable without the explicit consent of the customer. The regulator in its other directive has said that incidences have been brought to the notice of the authority where value added services have been renewed to prepaid consumers even in cases where available balance in consumer account was insufficient for the renewal of VAS resulting in negative balance. To prevent automatic renewal of a VAS, TRAI has also asked the telcos to provide prior notice of three days to the concerned subscriber asking whether the service should be renewed or not. TRAI also says that every service provider shall, at least three days before the due date of renewal of a subscribed value added service, inform the consumer through SMS, the due date for renewal of such service, the charges for renewal and tollfree telephone number for unsubscribing the value added service. “If, in response to such request, the consumer indicates his explicit consent by conveying “Yes”, such VAS shall be renewed and such consumer shall be informed through SMS the charges for renewal of subscription of value added service shall be deducted from subsequent recharge,” Trai said. However, most of the TRAI’s directives seem okay with the Telcos but the most controversial and unacceptable is the 9th Clause, in which TRAI says that in all cases where the value added services are activated through Out Bound Dialer or service provider initiated call or during pre-call ring back announcements (both voice as well as automated) and where a consumer dials a specified telephone number or short code or a telephone number providing interactive session for subscribing to a Value Added Service, the service provider shall obtain confirmation from the consumer through consumer originated SMS or e-mail or FAX or in writing within twenty four hours of activation of the value added service and charge the consumer only if the confirmation is received from him for such value added service and shall discontinue such value added service if no confirmation is received from the consumer. Now this point is receiving negative remarks from the operators as they find it practically unfeasible to receive any such confirmation from the side of consumer in written form. In an effort to find industry people’s view on this point, insightVAS came to know that the subscriber would probably not want any further correspondence in this regard and he/she would definitely not waste his/her time in writing an email or sending a fax back to the operators. Moreover, in many remote areas the facility and basic infrastructure for sending an email is not accessible. Most subscribers are still deprived of the internet facility while on the move, how they will be able to respond on such queries while moving. Anayou.com – A Central Social Platform For The Arab World launched by DU Telecom

by Paul Joseph June 20, 2011 Featured

Anayou is Du’s (UAE’s 2nd biggest telecom operator) new big online project , which seemingly aims to position itself as a central destination for users. Some are describing it as a social networking service, and even though that’s the biggest piece of it, there are other pieces to this puzzle that Du seems to be putting together. The first thing that you’ll notice from Anayou, before even getting to know what it does and doesn’t do, is how slick and neat it looks; it’s a well designed service that stands out from many of the other services that were previously launched in the region in the same area of focus. Anayou offers a variety of features, covering the different functionalities you’d expect from a social network like finding and connecting with your friends, following their updates on Anayou as well as on services like Twitter and Facebook, leave comments (shout outs) on their profile pages, as well as messaging them in private. On top of that, the messaging service expands to allow users to link their Gmail, Yahoo! mail or Hotmail accounts to Anayou, to be able to quickly have an overview of all their inboxes from one place. It also enables them to send SMS messages to their contacts from the same interface. There is a limit of 5 SMS messages per month though. Another section on the site called the Vault, enables users to upload and store their photos and videos, which they can choose to keep as private or share with their friends and contacts on the service, send in messages, or use for avatars and more. In the same section, users also get to import and grow their address book of contacts, as well as use the Mobile Sync application to backup their SMS messages. Anayou also acts as a central content portal for all types of entertainment content, providing users with all types of entertainment news; reviews of movies and music; movie details, trailers and cinema listings; songs, music videos and lyrics; celebrity news, photos and profiles; forums and more. The site also includes a whole Games section that provides a list of games of different categories that users can play right from their browsers; in addition to the latest games news and forums to discuss games. Among the interesting things that are planned for Anayou are Brand pages, where businesses will be able to create and manage their own brand pages to include their brand’s profile, upcoming events, discussion forums, contests, and connect with users from around the region. Anayou will also be working with brands to bring users special offers that they can benefit from, as well as share with their friends on the site. The service is currently stll in beta, and is available in Arabic, English and French so as to cover the whole Arab world region, and to be available to users in the language they prefer using the most. As you can see, the project is pretty big and ambitious from Du, covering many areas and trying to bring them all under one big umbrella; it should be worth watching to see how things work out in a space that is strongly dominated by Facebook, and whether Anayou will be able to grab some good market share in the region. Anayou is available on the IPhone /Ipod Touch/IPAD . The link to download from ITunes is . Mobile Sync with the Sync service is currently supported on Blackberry, iPhone and a selection of Nokia, Sony Ericsson and other models

SMS spam: more people will be using apps to send text messages in the next few years

by Paul Joseph May 9, 2011 Featured

Apps may be all the rage in the mobile phone space, but they’ll never kill SMS – in part because more people will be using apps to send text messages in the next few years. That’s according to Juniper Research, who says that revenues from A2P (application to person) SMS will top $70 billion by 2016 – which is also the year A2P messages will start making more money than traditional person-to-person SMS. Part of the reason for that is that the valuation of SMS is getting lower all the time as cellcos offer bucket plans to stay competitive. Also, says Juniper’s Daniel Ashdown, players within the mobile messaging ecosystem will be shifting their strategic focus “from communication between individuals, to sending and receiving service-enabling messages”. Put another way, it’s SMS broadcast made easier than ever before. Which is undoubtedly handy for users, as well as companies that want to leverage SMS for various services (Juniper lists financial services, advertising, marketing, business administration, ticketing and television voting as potentially hot A2P items), but this also raises another issue: SMS spam. There was a time when SMS spam was impractical due to costs. That’s been changing as cellcos started offering unlimited bucket plans and web services appeared making it possible to blast text messages to multiple phone numbers on the cheap. Even so, it was jarring when – at a recent GSM Asia-Pacific conference – Alan Ranger, Cloudmark’s mobile marketing VP, said that spammers are turning from email to SMS as a spam platform because there’s more money in it. Also, SMS spam is more likely to reach recipients. Spam accounts for 99% of all emails sent, but the filtering technology (whether at the ISP level, the client level or the web-service level) is so good that 98% of that spam never makes it to your inbox. SMS spam filtering is more primitive by comparison, in part because it’s not always easy to identify, and often users don’t have a way to easily report spam to cellcos. Until recently, “report as spam” wasn’t even an option in your SMS menu (and still isn’t, depending on how old your phone is or what model you just bought). Hence the GSMA’s Spam Reporting Service initiative, which is working on a way to not only make SMS spam reporting easier, but also give cellcos a way to monitor spam reports in real time and track spam attack trends as they unfold. That will come in handy, since A2P texting is likely to make spam filtering even more of a necessity for cellcos. Source:  telecomasia.net
