Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) is a technology unique to GSM. It is a capability built into the GSM standard for support of transmitting information over the signaling channels of the GSM network. USSD provides session-based communication, enabling a variety of applications. USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) is a menu-based system that enables interfacing with content based services. Instead of a browser, which requires an internet / GPRS connection), the USSD menu acts as browser to pull content to the phone.  USSD is somewhat faster than SMS because it  is a session-based communication, unlike SMS, which is transaction based. USSD is used as an excellent technology to enable roaming with mobile prepay service .Mobile chatting and friend finder applications are another perfect use for USSD as a menu driven application enabling other applications. USSD is the front-end to these types of applications, which require a menu and fast connections for the user interface. It is important to note that friend finder applications require location determination/management and presence/availability technologies and applications to allow the closed user group to detect if, when, and where members are available. Innovation: FunChat app-a social app with cross-platform chatting, gaming, and pranking launched.

FunMobility has launched its cross-platform entertainment app, FunChat available on the Apple appstore. The Pleasanton, Calif.-based company has created a social app with a bunch of different features, including cross-platform chatting, gaming, and pranking. This app is another point in the trend toward gamification (making non-game apps more interesting by making them more game-like). In this case, it gamifies mobile communications. FunChat blends the communication, HTML5 games, virtual currency, rewards, and achievements into a free app for the iPhone, iPod Touch and Android users. With the app, you players can push an audio prank to a smartphone, even if the phone is in standby mode. You can use this to send out wolf whistles or angry pig noises. FunChat is an extension of the company’s efforts that also include FunMail (which pairs your text messages with fun images), FunTones (funny ring tones), and FunMe, tools for sharing user-generated content. With FunChat’s Chattitude, you can customize your experience with avatars (virtual characters), chat bubbles and lots of virtual goods. With the games, you can join rooms that include casual titles such as concentration, carnival duck shooting, racing and others. The HTML5 games can be played across iOS and Android devices. IDC Analysis : Windows Phones to Overtake iPhone iOS by 2015

Microsoft’s Windows Phone OS will be the second most popular smartphone platform in 2015 according to handset shipments, according to the latest predictions from IDC. It sees Microsoft’s OS overtaking Symbian, BlackBerry and iOS in the next three years to take a 20.3% share of global smartphone shipments in 2015, up from its estimated 2011 market share of 3.8%. IDC predicts Windows Phone will overhaul Apple’s iPhone by 2015 IDC thinks Google’s Android will remain top dog, with a 38.9% share of global shipments in 2011 rising to 43.8% in 2015 – which with IDC predicting 982 million smartphone shipments that year, would mean 430 million Android smartphones. IDC predicts that iOS’ global market share will slip from 18.2% to 16.9% between 2011 and 2015, while BlackBerry will fall from 14.2% to 13.4% – although in both cases, the growth of the overall market means both Apple and RIM will be shipping more devices. Symbian is expected to decline from a 20.6% global share in 2011 to 0.1% in 2015, based on Nokia’s plans to phase its platform out in favour of Windows Phone 7. “End-users are becoming more sophisticated about what kinds of experiences are offered by the different operating systems,” says IDC’s Ramon Llamas. “Taking this as their cue, operating system developers will strive for more intuitive and seamless experiences, but will also look to differentiate themselves along key features and characteristics.” IDC thinks that 2011′s total smartphone shipments of 472 million units will be up 55% on 2010′s 305 million.
