Indian telcos earn Rs 46,891 cr in Q1, Airtel leads pack

Bharti Airtel has cornered around 22 per cent of the total revenue of Rs 46,891.61 crore earned by telecom service providers during the first quarter of 2011-12, regulator Trai said. Airtel’s gross revenue was the highest at Rs 10,212.96 crore, followed by Vodafone at Rs 6,893.91 crore, Idea Cellular at Rs 4,600.77 crore and state-run BSNL at Rs 4427.80 crore, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) said in its India Telecom Services Performance Indicator Report. India’s netizens: Now 100-mn strong

After mobile phones, India is set to see another revolution in the technology space. According to the latest report of the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), the number of internet users in India crossed the 100-million mark in September. This is a 13 per cent increase over last year, when the number of internet users stood at 87 million. The total number of ‘claimed’ internet users now stands at 112 million. India eyes 4G service launch next year

After the launch of third- generation (3G) telecom services, India may see more advanced 4G services in the second half of next year. India to Ease Telecom Merger Rules by December in New Policy

India’s government aims to ease rules for mergers and acquisitions among mobile-phone service providers under a new policy it plans to adopt by December. The Department of Telecommunications plans to have the new regulations, which also will fix a mechanism for pricing wireless airwaves, approved by the cabinet by Dec. 31, R. India Lobby: 3G Roaming Pacts Don’t Violate Rules

A lobby group of Indian mobile-phone operators said Thursday they haven’t violated telecom licensing rules in signing pacts among themselves to offer third-generation cellular services in service areas where they don’t have bandwidth. The statement by the Cellular Operators Association of India comes after federal Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal said his ministry was examining whether such agreements violated licensing rules. Source

Telecom CEOs call on Sibal, seek clarity on 3G roaming

Telecom operators on Friday raised concerns about the numerous cases of penalty being imposed by the Department of Telecom. At a meeting Kapil Sibal, Minister of Communications and IT, the CEOs of all the leading cellular operators sought clarification on DoT’s approach since many of the penalties are for minor technicalities. Mobile Growth in India Expands Telecom Opportunities

Four years ago, there were 218 million mobile phone lines in India. Today, there are 858 million, according to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. In 2009, India’s telecom industry directly employed about 400,000. That number is expected to grow. Telecom companies in India will add more than 10% to their teams this year, said Vikram Chhachhi, executive vice president with US search firm DHR International. Airtel, India’s largest mobile operator by market share, estimates it will hire 2,000 employees this year, mostly in sales, for a total workforce of approximately 16,000. Source
