Number portability requests just 2% of India’s wireless base

The number of requests received for MNP since it was launched in November 2010 reached only 18.1 million till August 2011 – 9 months after it was launched in November 2010 – a mere 2% of India’s wireless base of 865.71 million. India eyes 4G service launch next year

After the launch of third- generation (3G) telecom services, India may see more advanced 4G services in the second half of next year. India’s annual mobile handsets demand to reach 350mn by 2020

Demand of mobile handsets in the country is expected to reach 350 million units per annum by 2020, says a study by industry body FICCI with market analyst firm Ernst and Young (E&Y). “India is the world’s second-largest telecom market after China, with the total wireless subscriber base crossing 850 million at the end of June, 2011. India to Ease Telecom Merger Rules by December in New Policy

India’s government aims to ease rules for mergers and acquisitions among mobile-phone service providers under a new policy it plans to adopt by December. The Department of Telecommunications plans to have the new regulations, which also will fix a mechanism for pricing wireless airwaves, approved by the cabinet by Dec. 31, R. Chandrashekhar, secretary for telecommunications, said in an interview yesterday in New Delhi. Source

Google bets big on mobile internet in India

Internet giant Google expects India’s internet growth to be driven by mobile users, predicting that they will form the majority of new internet users in the country as low-priced smartphones become available. India now has 100 million internet users, less than a tenth of the country’s population of 1.2 billion, but still the third largest user base behind China and the United States. Smartphone users in India indulge more in content, says Nielsen report

Socializing in India via mobile phones these days has become more entertainment and internet based than texts and phone calls, says a report by Nielsen and Informate Mobile Intelligence. This partnership essentially seeks to integrate the power of mobile insights and analytics for the corporate world involving the telecom industry. The team has disclosed that average smartphone users allot nearly 2.5 hours per day for accessing their handset. Around 72% of the time they engage in gaming, entertainment, apps and internet based content. Notably, only 28% of their time is used in texting someone or making calls. “India’s rapidly growing mobile user base presents marketers and businesses with an opportunity to improve the precision with which they reach out to the new Indian consumer. Today, younger Indians for instance, prefer texting and chat over voice communications and understanding this behavior better can define data consumption and customer acquisition strategies for operators and handset providers,” shared Farshad Family, MD – Media, Nielsen India. The analysts found that young smartphone users gave more than 3 hours to their phone every day and nearly 60% of the time, they indulged in gaming, surfing the internet and multimedia. Around 68% of 15 to 20 year olds utilized a chat app previous month, while almost 42% of people aged 31 and older did the same. Data utility for 3G users was approximately 44% greater than those with 2G.

Indian mobile customers prefer Android smartphones over iPhone: Survey

According to the Know Your Mobile India survey, Indian consumers are most likely to buy an Android phone as their next phone. About 50 percent of the respondents indicated their next purchase would be an Android phone while only 35 percent of users displayed interest in buying an iPhone. While Apple products are immensely popular worldwide, in India the delayed launches of Apple products coupled with pricey tag has made them less desirable. However this trend could change with the arrival of the rumored budget iPhone 4 with 8GB memory. According to the survey about 87 percent of the respondents stated operating system as the key driver for mobile selection. It was followed by internet browsing capabilities and high-resolution camera. Interestingly while price is generally seen as a dominant feature among the budget conscious Indian mobile users, it was not the deciding factor for selecting a mobile phone. (Press Release)

Samsung plans to make India export hub
