Indian telcos earn Rs 46,891 cr in Q1, Airtel leads pack

Bharti Airtel has cornered around 22 per cent of the total revenue of Rs 46,891.61 crore earned by telecom service providers during the first quarter of 2011-12, regulator Trai said. Airtel’s gross revenue was the highest at Rs 10,212.96 crore, followed by Vodafone at Rs 6,893.91 crore, Idea Cellular at Rs 4,600.77 crore and state-run BSNL at Rs 4427.80 crore, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) said in its India Telecom Services Performance Indicator Report. India’s netizens: Now 100-mn strong

According to the latest report of the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), the number of internet users in India crossed the 100-million mark in September. This is a 13 per cent increase over last year, when the number of internet users stood at 87 million. The total number of ‘claimed’ internet users now stands at 112 million. India eyes 4G service launch next year

Google bets big on mobile internet in India

Internet giant Google expects India’s internet growth to be driven by mobile users, predicting that they will form the majority of new internet users in the country as low-priced smartphones become available. India now has 100 million internet users, less than a tenth of the country’s population of 1.2 billion, but still the third largest user base behind China and the United States. Centre has final say on telecom

Centre has absolute powers to decide the terms and conditions for telecom operators as neither the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) nor the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) can overrule it, the Supreme Court has ruled. The apex court said though TRAI has been conferred with the statutory power to recommend the terms and conditions of the license and the Central Government was bound to seek its recommendations, yet, the same was not binding on it. Ericsson to export India model to Europe, Latin America

Ericsson , the world’s largest telecom gear manufacturer, is counting on services it has developed in India for growing its multi-billion dollar managed services business in Europe and Latin America. Details are unknown, but the Swedish telecom equipment manufacturer plans to roll out a spate of engineering support service centres in Romania , Brazil and Mexico which will be modelled along the lines of its India regional technical centres (RTCs). Tata Teleservices May Take Part in India Mobile Consolidation, DoCoMo Says

NTT DoCoMo Inc., Japan’s biggest mobile-phone operator, said its partner Tata Teleservices Ltd. in India may take part in consolidation in the world’s second- largest wireless market. “If you look at the positioning of Tata Teleservices, it is possible that they can be part of this consolidation,” Masatoshi Suzuki, a DoCoMo senior executive vice president in charge of overseas strategy, said in an interview in Geneva yesterday. “We need to look at the possibility of growth as well as at the regulatory environment.” Source

Now, roaming service to become free in India?

India’s new telecoms policy is a mixed bag for operators. The scandal-ridden sector is crying out for consolidation. Delhi’s new policy will allow spectrum trading and, theoretically, free up M&A too. But costs will rise and takeovers are unlikely until the corruption investigations are complete. Almost everyone agrees that the sector has too many players, and that margins have been driven too low to be sustainable. There are 15 firms in India. Reliance Communication’s average revenue per user fell to $2.26 per month in the first quarter of 2011 from $7.63 in 2008. Source
