Finance Ministry asks DoT to auction broadband spectrum

With revenues under pressure and market conditions not favouring disinvestment, the Finance Ministry is putting pressure on the Telecom Department to go in for a fresh round of broadband spectrum auction this fiscal. The Department of Economic Affairs has yet again asked the Department of Telecom to sell available broadband spectrum at the earliest to meet non-tax revenue targets. The DoT has 20 Mhz of broadband spectrum, which is enough for accommodating one operator in most of the telecom circle. Source

Termination notices for 85 new licences issued: DoT to PAC

The telecom ministry has informed the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) that it has issued show cause notices to 13 companies for termination of their licences, who are stated to be “ineligible” for getting them. Based on the report of the CAG, the Department of Telecom (DoT) has “issued show cause notices to 13 companies for termination of the 85 new licences issued in 2008. The companies have given their replies which are under examination,” DoT said in its reply to PAC’s questionnaire. Source

India revives BSNL, MTNL merger plan

Telecoms department calls for state-owned companies to combine their strengths. India’s Department of Telecommunications has revived a proposal for the merger of state-run telecom companies Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd., the Business Standard newspaper reported Wednesday, citing a note from the department. In its draft strategic plan the department, while showing concern over the deteriorating performance of BSNL and MTNL, said the companies should be merged as they have complimentary operations and can combine their strengths, the newspaper said.
