The market for mobile app development services reached $US 20.5 billion in 2011

by Paul Joseph January 10, 2012 Featured

In 2011 publishers created $US 6.8 billion in application download revenues while app development revenues reached $US 20.5 billion. The development service became a mass market almost 3 times of the size of the application download market today.     The market for mobile application development services, including application creation, management, distribution and extension services, has reached $US 20.5 billion vs. $US 6.8 billion in app downloads in 2011. Thus the development market surpassed the content market by the factor of 3. Today most app project revenue is generated from “classical” app creation services (concept creation, design and coding). New service types like app libraries, white label solutions and multi platform app development tools have become more and more popular, but do not yet take a major share of the market. Prices for application development services vary significantly between regions. UK developers charge $US 626 per day whereas competitors from India charge, on average, $US 138 per working day. App development partners using price as the main criteria for selection will not be lead to an optimal solution as most of the price differences are offset by the additional time needed by offshore app developers. For more information on the app developer industry see the research report, “ The Market for Mobile Application Development Services (2010-2015) – Selling The Spades To The App Gold Diggers ”. This report covers the dynamic market on 98 pages. It is written for app developers as a planning and benchmarking tool as well as for app publishers who wants to develop their sourcing strategy. iPad hits 3B downloads in just a year, ABI Research report

by Paul Joseph January 6, 2012 Featured

iPad users are estimated to have cumulatively downloaded three billion applications since the launch of the iPad in 2010, a report said. The ABI Research report said this was 19% of all cumulative downloads by Apple users. The iPhone took as long as two years before being able to achieve this level of downloads, while the iPad made it within nearly a year and a half. In comparison, Android tablets only have around 440 million downloads thus far. “Discounting all those apps that were originally developed for Android smartphones, Android still trails greatly behind the iPad in terms of its tablet app offerings,” said Lim Shiyang, research associate at ABI Research. “Many Android tablets in the market are still using older versions of Android, which disadvantages users from enjoying the better effects of apps produced from more advanced software development kits.” Besides offering a larger quantity of iPad-specific apps, Apple’s iPad apps are generally considered to be of a better quality compared to Android tablet-specific apps. As of Q3 2011, there were 120,000 apps published specifically for the iPad. However, things are expected to change as manufacturers adopt the recently-released Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich, as well as accelerate product development to close up the specifications gap between their tablets, such as the Amazon Kindle Fire and the iPad. Annual Android app downloads for smartphones are expected to hit 58 Billion by 2016, compared to 27 billion for Apple’s iPhone, the report added.

It will be launched within the next one month. The proposed mobile app of IRCTC will enable users to access features similar to what is available on the full web version of the IRCTC, and for payment people can use their credit card, debit card or cash cards. There are already three apps – Paymate, Ngpay and Atom that can be used to book railway tickets, and are available across all platforms. These apps accept payment through credit cards, debit cards or mobile wallet accounts maintained by the service provider. Recently, Indian Railways also allowed travelers the option of carrying their tickets in the phone itself instead of having to print an e-ticket. Travelers will, however, still need to carry a valid identity proof. Source: The Mobile Indian

Flurry report: Apps Make More Money on iPhone than Android

by Paul Joseph January 3, 2012 Featured

Not too hard to believe, especially from our vantage point, but it turns out that there’s some hard data to back it up. In a blog post recently, mobile analytics company Flurry showed off some numbers and created some infographics to tell the story. Flurry shows the fact that developers are making more money on iOS than on Android, even as the numbers of Android OS enabled smartphones continues to increase, commanding as much as 53% of the market. Here’s how Flurry puts it : “Anecdotally, developers consistently tell us that they make more money on iOS, about three to four times as much. To be sure, we pulled a sample of in-app purchase data from a set of top apps with versions on both iOS and Android, comprising of several million daily active users (DAUs). Running the numbers, we find that, on average, for every $1.00 generated on iOS, the same app will generate $0.24 on Android.” Which brings us to the next point. Flurry notes a definite discrepancy in the number of new projects by developers for iOS vs those for Android. The graphic below shows that developer support, as measured by the projects committed to on each platform, has declined from over a third to under a quarter of all new projects. Flurry attributes this to expanded availability of iOS devices on networks like Verizon and Sprint, as well as successful flagship product launches in the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S. They also note that Android does not have this kind of product focus, with a ton of different competing handhelds in the market. Does this mean that Android is losing? Far from it, says the Guardian, quoting a post by Great Little War Game developer, Paul Johnson, in which he discusses the lucrative nature of developing on both platforms, especially with the recent $.10 sale on Google’s Android Market. Said Johnson, “We’re on track to have taken around $125,000 by the end of this first sales quarter and that’s not too shabby a return in my book,” writes Johnson. “If you have an iOS game that’s pretty decent and you’re wondering about porting to Android, just do it.” Bottom line? Seems like most developers are looking to iOS for their winter holiday income, while adding Android to the picture just makes good business sense. If developers can only commit resources to one or the other? Looks like iOS is the clear winner, at least for now. Source : Flurry

Apple iOS Apps Generate 6 Times the Revenue of Android Apps

by Paul Joseph December 26, 2011 Featured

The Android Market and Apple App Store are locked in constant battle for the hearts and minds of mobile device users. Although Apple still holds a lead in the total number of app offerings, its dominance looks to be diminishing . But fear not, Apple fan boys: Team iOS still holds an overwhelming lead in terms of app purchase revenue. Distimo , an app store analysis firm, compared the 200 highest-grossing apps in each market. According to a study released Tuesday, the firm found that the iOS App Store has generated six times the total revenues of the Android Market. iPhone app sales earned four times the profits of the Android Market, while iPad app sales made twice as much money as Android Market app sales. Android’s poor showing certainly isn’t for a lack of total downloads, or for a lack of Android devices running in the wild. Google’s Andy Rubin tweeted that the number of Android activations is now up to 700,000 devices per day , and Android is the dominant smartphone OS in most of the U.S. And while the iOS App Store has seen more than 18 billion app downloads, Android is catching up fast: It recently crossed the 10 billion downloads mark. Distimo notes that the “freemium” model has become a dominant business strategy for app developers on both major platforms. In this monetization approach, apps are free, but developers build revenue through in-app purchases. About half of the top 200 grossing iOS apps are now “freemium,” and that number is even higher — 65 percent — for Android. Distimo’s findings jibe with previous reports and estimates from analysts concerning app revenues for the two respective platforms. Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster estimated that Apple has 85 to 90 percent market share in total app revenues. This year alone, the iOS App Store has provided developers with $3.4 billion in revenues, while the Android Market has delivered only $240 million to its developers. It’s not that Android users don’t have money to spare on apps or in-app purchases. A Bloomworlds study found that more than a quarter of Android users make $100k or more a year. So perhaps Android users are just less susceptible to the wiles of in-app advertising and purchases. Or perhaps a greater number of young iOS users — kids and teenagers — blithely tap away to purchase in-app upgrades. A recent Daily Show sketch illustrated this point to hilarious effect. Distimo vice-president and co-founder Remco van den Elzen attributes the discrepancy simply to the ease of purchasing on each platform. “Google has been less successful in getting users to pay for apps because Google Checkout is considered to be more cumbersome than iTunes,” van den Elzen says. “More importantly, however, Apple has always been very successful in getting everyone to enter their credit card details when activating their devices. This has benefited Apple significantly, as the threshold for purchasing the first application is lower.” The Distimo study also found something surprising about iOS users’ downloading habits. “The number of downloads in the Apple App Store in the US has been declining for nearly the entire year,” the report states. “The lowest point coincided with the moment when the anticipation for the new iPhone was at its height in September.” Distimo found this trend was similar for the iPad as well: Downloads went down just before the announcement of a new product (in February, before the iPad 2 was launched), but went back up immediately after (in March). Perhaps the ability to sync and store data to iCloud will change this trend in the future. Download the latest report from Distimo
