Indic Android Phone

by Paul Joseph April 28, 2012 Featured

Review: WIWOS Device, India’s First Android Phone With Indic Language Support Looks very interesting! If only one of the larger players like Samsung take it up, we may see large scale adoption. Else, it is bound to be niche. Sad! Another interesting part there is about the BBC Hindi site and the use of ‘Pahla panna’ in place of ‘Ghar’. I have noticed that their Tamil site too is very well done in terms of translation – Mugappu for Home instead of Veedu. Incidentally mugappu means more of ‘entrance’ than first page, so they have chosen the right word for each language. Unlike the lazy TV advertisers in India who do an horrible job of translating dialogues in Hindi to Tamil.

Yet, the launch of the latest generation of broadband services in India by Bharti Airtel, in the eastern city today, says a lot about the state of mind of the country’s telecom leader. This is new territory for Bharti. Never in its 18-year history has the Rs 59,601 crore company led-and shaped-a technology. In 2G (short for second-generation) telephony and broadband, it followed. Of the next 300 million Internet users to be added, more than 200 million are expected to be mobile Internet users. This phenomenon will be aided by the growing popularity and affordability of smartphones – the lowest priced smartphone is available today at Rs 3,000. Source
