Devices Peek , a mobile ‘email’ device is soon to be launched in India through Aircel. You can check out the views of different experts about its success on the link. But I say it will NOT succeed. Heard of eBook readers ? Well, I mean the desi ones? We are going to have 2 of them soon! Services & Apps Pressmart has enabled support for Apple’s iPad platform – With their solution, publishers can convert their print publications into iPad ready formats! Got to check out their site to see if they support Kindle, Pi etc Bolt browser has announced support for widgets. But no clue on what kind of widgets, which platform etc are available. Do they want several app developers to flock to develop widgets for Bolt alone? No clue on that. I wish I am wrong – I do not read about Bolt anywhere else apart from their PR. Tata & Reliance have launched SMS-based email service through ISEEMEDIA. Is there really a market for this? Is the user experience good enough? The Email-SMS services I have tried out have all been bad. Image via CrunchBase One97 has bought stake in TenCube, makers of WaveSecure (a mobile backup & tracking solution) that has won awards at Google dev challenges and is pre-embedded in a few Nokia phones. This will help them compete well against OnMobile who made a similar buy at France recently. Idea’s App-Store is turning out to be not an App-Store after all. It is just a on device portal with a few ‘walled garden’ services around. What a stupid idea, Sir Ji. Operators BSNL claims to be reaching 400 cities with 3G services by March 2010 (in a little more than a year since launch). Well, if only they offered some killer service over 3G and if they marketed it well and if MNP comes into effect soon ( tentatively planned for April 1 ) and if 3G auctions for private players is postponed by one more year ( no timeframe defined yet ), people might consider switching to BSNL! Now, that is a lot of IFs there! Here is one company with a lot of services to offer (to the operators) once 3G becomes mainstream. A report about spectrum hoarding in India, how operators ‘inflate’ subscriber additions for this etc can be read here . You may have started to notice Videocon ads for mobile devices lately. Expect their mobile services too soon. Hope they succeed in bridging both and offering the best possible experience, just as Airtel plans to synergize their mobile & DTH offerings. Incidentally, Videocon too have their own DTH service. Regulation This is really futuristic – DoT is mulling about providing a single license to about 17 different services. For this to be coming to fruition, it will at least be 2015 :) Miscellaneous Micromax , probably the most popular amongst the second tier (or third) vendors has roped in Akshay Kumar. Find a report on mobile expenditure patterns at the BoP here . I have not read the details of it yet but am sure good insights could come out of it. A report on mobile-ads is available here – Apparently, 37% youngsters are open to receiving mobile ads.
